A central air conditioner is a device that provides cool air than runs through a system of ducts having a supply duct and a return duct. Supply ducts also called registers are opening in the flooring, walls, and ceilings. These openings have a grill covering them. Through the supply ducts cooled air is brought into the home. As this cool air goes around the house it gets warmer so it has to go back and be cooled. The air flows through return ducts and back into the central air conditioner.
There are two types of central air conditioners. There is the split system and then there is the packaged unit.
Inside a split-system air conditioner, the condenser and compressor are kept inside the metal cabinet found outdoor. The evaporator can be found inside the indoor metal cabinet. There are a number of slit-system air conditioners that also have a furnace or a part of a heat pump inside the indoor cabinet. Inside the cabinet the evaporator coil of the air conditioner is set up. If there is no coil inside the cabinet, then it may be inside the main supply duct connected to the heat pump or furnace. If you already have a furnace inside your house but you don’t have an air conditioner, then you should probably buy a split-system air conditioner to be more economical. Air conditioner repair of these types of systems are usually more complicated.
In the case of the packaged central air conditioner, all the discussed components (evaporator, condenser, and compressor) can be found inside a single cabinet. Usually this cabinet is built on a slab of concrete located beside the foundation of the house or on the roof. Packaged air conditioners are used in smaller commercial buildings. The air conditioners return and supply ducts are connected to the house going inside through the outside wall of the house or through the roof and then connected to the packaged air conditioner itself which is commonly place outside of the house. It is common for a packaged air conditioner to have a natural gas furnace or an electric heating coil built in. Because of these being a combination of heating and air conditioning, there is no need to have a separate furnace inside the house.
When you are looking to buy a new central air conditioner, you should watch out for these features in them:
Another consideration, as well, is if there are any air conditioning and heating repair companies that can handle the type of unit you will purchase.
