We have been expanding our concession stands so that they include several new offerings this year. We didn’t want to risk customers getting bored with the choices when they come to the fair this summer, because there are so many new and trendy things out there. We think that this will really help us to increase our sales and drive our business to the next level this summer. One of the things we did over the down time this year was purchase all new popcorn machines for each of our concession stands. There are many new and varied flavors that can be added to popcorn now, and the old machines just weren’t compatible with the flavored oils and powders that we have now stocked the stand with. There is also now space for the new nacho machine, as the new popcorn machines don’t take up nearly as much counter space as the old ones did. There is a new machine that will make a dough type treat that we have never seen or done before, but it seems like it really is all the rage, and that is what we want. We want our customers to not worry about waiting in line for the treats we have, because they really want whatever it is they are standing in line for. The flavored popcorn that will come out of the new popcorn machines is going to be a big draw, I’m counting on it as part of my business model this year.

Machines are getting more efficient and are producing more in less space. This frees up other counter space for us to fill with new machines that are now being sold by the American concession supply company. Whatever they have, I am going to try to buy and utilize for a higher return on my investment this year. I know that it has been a harsh winter, and that the summer will be equally harsh at the opposite end of the spectrum. That means that people are going to want to get out and enjoy the sun while they can, and they are also going to want to get into the shade after a long day standing in lines, and that is where we will come in to provide whatever they are looking for. The American concession supply has many new machines that will provide all kinds of cold and sweet treats, and they are my only supplier, so that is what I am going to be counting on this summer. Their marketing is never off, and if they are stocking up on those things, its because that is what people really will be wanting this year. I’m actually really excited to get to use some of our new gear, and I can’t wait until the fair grounds open and we start having events and long lines.

Business idea: local organic food delivery service

The best idea I ever had for a business was a local organic food delivery service. At the time, I had no means of raising capital and there was no way that I could go out on my own and get the financing to do it. I wasn’t in the position to get something like that done, and so I just had this great idea and never did anything with it. But I think that maybe the idea was before it’s time, because these types of services didn’t start popping up until many years later, and only then in the large metro areas of the country. It has taken about a decade for the idea to travel down to the smaller communities and smaller sized cities. But for the last decade, I used that great idea in my business school classes, and I would have students write out a business plan for their own local organic food delivery service.  There were some great business plans that came out of those classrooms, and I do hope and one of those students is behind this new crop of delivery services that have become so popular here in the Denver metro area.  I can only hope that my idea that came to me before it’s time has now been used by a former student to create income and generate good in the world.

I was afraid that we would lose our organic farmers, and we have actually lost many of them. But new ones have sprouted in their place, so it is not all a bad thing. But I was afraid that with the introduction of convenience at the store in the form of packaged meals we would no longer want to spend time on our food. And this is what happened, for many years. I do believe that we are seeing a resurgence though, into the organic farming market, and there are those who are working to create businesses that will meet that new demand. Organic and local, but also convenience and timeliness. It is the best way to reintroduce organic and locally grown food to a busy and stressed out market of people who need to shop. My idea may have been ahead of its time, but I’m so glad to see that it is now succeeding in many markets and areas of the country, because someone else came along and did it at the right time. We need to support our farmers, and we also need convenience.

Getting all of our windows replaced

When we moved into our little condo, we knew that there would be some updates that we would want to take care of and get done. One thing about the place is the wood floors. They are original to the building from the 1940′s, and they are starting to crack and break through in some places. It is going to take quite a bit of work to get them fixed or replaced, so we aren’t going to worry about that yet. But we do know that we will need to get them fixed here someday soon. Or we may just sell the condo first. But in the mean time, we really need to get the windows replaced. Replacement windows are expensive, but in the long run it will make the condo much more livable, as we won’t have to deal with cold drafts of air in the winter and a hot house in the summer. We currently have those single pane glass windows that you can crank to open out, so they are tall and narrow, with several panes per window.  We want to get all new windows in those same spaces, so we don’t want to have to do any construction to change the shape or size of the window openings, we just want to remove the windows that are there and get new windows put into the old window spaces. Replacement windows aren’t the cheapest update that we could do to the house, but they will be worth it in the long run, because we will be able to ask for more when it comes to selling our place in the future. We are going to want to be able to get out whatever money we put into the place, and so we will want to be sure that we put our money into updates that are going to be a return on investment, rather than just something that we think will be nice looking for the time being. And we feel that replacement windows are definitely the way to go when it comes to that, because while they may be expensive, we are going to need them and we will be able to install them ourselves. So we won’t have to pay for a contractor to come in and make any changes or anything like that. We will instead just need to get back that outlay of funds that it cost to purchase the replacement windows and that will be all. And for sure, because of the cost savings of heating and cooling the place, we will definitely be able to make up for the money that we spent to buy the replacement windows. It is going to be a hot summer is what everyone is saying, and so we want to be sure that we have insulation in the windows so that we can make the best use of our air conditioner. We don’t want that money going right out the windows either, so this way it will work best for us in the summer and in winter.

Taking the kids to their new orthodontist

I have been looking for the past year or so to find a new orthodontist that takes new clients.  So many of them are already full with work loads that they can’t fit new clients into, and I have three children that are all in braces at the same time, so I need to find an orthodontist who will take all three of them on as new patients. We had a great orthodontist that was right down the road from our house, which was perfect for me because I feel like I’m always in the car and I’m always driving one kid here and one kid there, and it was just really easy for me to take them right down the road and drop them off at the office for their check up or cleaning. But she ended up moving out of state because he husband got a job in a different town. So for the last several months, I have been trying to find a replacement. But of course, it has been much harder than I thought it would be. Every time I find a place that caters to kids and does specialty work on small teeth and gums, they don’t have room to take on all three of them as new patients. So then I go on with the search, and I have yet to be successful.  But it is time for them to get in, so I’m going to have to split them up and take them all to different orthodontists this time.  While this is not the ideal situation, it is better than letting their oral health care drop and not taking them in to see anyone. That is really just not an option for us, so I will do what ever needs to be done to ensure that they are still on track with their braces and their teeth are healthy and clean. I have never had to deal with the braces thing before, and neither has my husband. But for some reason, all of our kids were told at a young age that they would need to have braces for a few years to ensure their teeth formed straight and there were no problems later in their lives.  So we have been doing the braces thing for the last few years. This year the oldest will be getting hers off, and then its just one more year for her two younger brothers. They are not too far behind her, just about a year. And though I will always do what needs to be done for them, I am getting excited thinking about the time out of the car that I will have back when we no longer have to drive them to their orthodontist appointments. We can fill it up with something else I suppose, but the orthodontist will still be a part of their life, making sure every year that their teeth are healthy and strong and there are no bad diseases festering in their gums.

So many people choose to spend their family vacation time in Maui, and often they do not realize that is it really easy to find a luxury vacation home to rent while you are visiting. Many people just search through the data base or web sites of all the hotels on the island, but do not really think that there are other options for their stay. But, of course, this is not the case. There is a very large number of wonderful luxury vacation homes that are for rent short term, mostly set up for travelers who are on vacation, though some of them are also useful and set up for business travelers to the islands.  The towns that are situated around the edges of the island on the beach, as well as the up country towns that have wonderful views of the entire island, all have luxury vacation homes for rent for vacationers. While some people may think that staying in a hotel will be cheaper, it is actually much more cost effective to rent a luxury vacation home while you are on Maui instead of paying all the fees and taxes that are associated with staying in a hotel. There are all types of styles of rental homes as well, from the small studio’s that look directly on to the beach to those larger houses that can fit whole families comfortably.  The best thing about a luxury vacation home in Maui is that you have access to a full kitchen, and you don’t have to worry about paying for parking for a rental car at the hotel, or for having to share a pool or a hot tub with other travelers.  You will have your own drive way and kitchen, as well as patio and out door space, and this really is a huge cost saver for so many vacationing families. The super markets here on the island are not too much more expensive than back home, and we also have a wal mart, and a target and a costco, so it makes it easy to just stock up on the food that you want to cook at home to save money on eating out. Our gas is more expensive than many places on the main land, so that will have to be budgeted for. But with the money you will be saving by staying in a luxury vacation home, you should not have to worry about the cost of the gas. You won’t have to eat out for every meal, and you will enjoy incredible views and wonderful sleeping arrangements with this type of accommodations.  The only thing you really need to do is decide where on the island you are going to stay, because that can make all the difference, with traffic and all. If you want to be on the beach, there are several vacation rental options for that. If instead you want to be up country, there are even more places that you can choose from. It is the best of all worlds.

Social media strategy is the next big thing

While only about a decade ago social media strategy didn’t even exist, it has quickly taken over as the main focus for any small or large scale company or organization. Taking the time to create and follow a social media strategy is as important or even more important than any other company strategy, as this is the way that we now interact.  Social media strategy is all about getting your brand and your ideas out there, and then watching as they continue to be passed around, from one social media user to the next. Social media is the way that we interact with the world, many people use that as their only form of news and information, and also the only media they use to see and interact with advertisements. It is the social media strategies that can take a company from a small start up to a large scale corporation, or from a new non profit to a large scale organization that is making huge impacts in their area of interest. Social media is where we see news stories that others in our networks have posted, it is where we are introduced to advertising campaigns that friends have shared because they were interesting. Any company that does not think clearly and logically about their social media strategy is bound to fail in their quest to obtain new customers and attract new interest and new clients.

This was sufficient in the beginning, but now that social media has evolved and come to encompass nearly everything that we do daily, social media strategy must become much broader in order to handle all the ways in which it is used. Without the interest, there is no reason to be on social media, and so you must generate that interest through the creation of interesting content and unique shares. It is unreliable to assume that you can continue on with a business strategy that does not include a strong focus on social media strategy, as we see this is the direction we are headed in. It won’t be long until almost our full daily life is conducted within social media, from working to communicating, reaching out and reading the news. These are all done on a platform that can provide a wealth of exposure and interest if it is valued and taken into consideration when creating the future strategy and strategic goals and plans for an organization.

Opening my own carpet cleaning business

I grew up with a mother and father that were in business for themselves. They always had time for us when we needed it, were at all of our games and other events, and still were able to work hard and make a living for our family. In that same spirit and tradition, I have decided to go into business for myself and open a carpet cleaning enterprise. I know the area and the neighborhood because I have lived here all my life. I have a large network of friends and people that I know, and I’m sure that it won’t be that difficult to get myself out there and get people to give me a chance. I have learned how to best use the machinery that is required to clean carpets, and I also have taken several small business classes that have really prepared me to work for myself. I know how to get things done, and I know that I can work hard and at odd hours so that I can grow this business and become just as accomplished as my parents were with their restaurant. I have always enjoyed making my own hours, and that is why it was so hard for me with a regular job while I was in school. I’m convinced that this carpet cleaning business will be much better, and that I can be a big success at it. Its going to be great, and its going to be mine to make successful or not. So I’m going to commit my all to it.
